Hiking Through History - Sweetwater Cave

The cave was first used by the Ute Indians, as a stopping place during their travels to and from their summer hunting grounds.  There are many pictographs, that are verified as actual drawings by the Utes during this time.  There have been many others, dating back to the 1800s who have added their names to the walls in the cave.  There has not been any proof found in the cave, that the Utes lived in the cave, but may have used it for worship.

One of the most interesting stories we heard from the day, was that of Diamond Jack Alterie.  While he had many aliases this was the name he went by when he was the owner of Sweetwater Resort.  Prior to that, he had been a gangster in Chicago.
