CDOT To Begin Enforcing Traction Law

When weather conditions require, CDOT will enforce a Traction Law. The law requires all passenger vehicles to have snow tires, tires with a mud/snow designation or four-wheel drive. All tires must have a minimum one-eighth inch tread.
During severe storms CDOT will require every car on the interstate to have chains or an alternate traction device. CDOT says this is the final safety measure before closing the highway.
CDOT says when the requirements are in effect people can be fined over $130 for not having the proper equipment.
CDOT is partnering with tire companies to make sure people have the right tires to drive on I-70. CDOT has a webpage with resources for how to determine tire tread and find discounts on tires.
CDOT is also warning drivers to obey the Move It Law—which requires drivers to move vehicles off the road if they are having problems. CDOT says moving crashes is the simplest and safest ways to keep traffic flowing.

Find your local tire discount by clicking the map below.

Know if you need new tires? Take the Quarter Test!
  • Insert a quarter into the tire tread upside down, with Washington’s head going in first
  • If the top of George’s head is covered by the tread, your tires are OK – do this test at multiple points around each tire
  • If the top of his head is visible at any point around the tire, you need new tires
  • If you are caught without snow tires in a personal vehicle, the fine is $132.00
  • If you cause an incident, without snow tires in a personal vehicle, the fine is $656.00
