Three people were killed immediately, two teen-age girls and a housewife. A young man died two days later in a hospital in Denver. The other eight skiers were injured, some severely. It was the worst ski-area accident in U.S. history.

In March of 1996, as part of Vail Associates' most ambitious mountain improvement year ever, Beaver Creek Mountain completed the first step in introducing the Village-to-Village ski experience by connecting (through ski lifts and trails) three distinct ski areas - Beaver Creek, Bachelor Gulch, and Arrowhead. Vail was the hunting ground and summer residence of the Ute Indians before the arrival of the white man in the mid-19th century.

Zach's Cabin was built in Bachelor Gulch, as the on-mountain dining facility for members of the Bachelor Gulch Club. Construction on Zach's Cabin began during the summer of 1999, with completion of the cabin during the 1999-2000 ski season.

Made up of excellent skiers and mountaineers, the 10th fought in mountainous northern Italy and upon return, they became major players in the quickly growing ski industry founding or working at over 50 resorts in the US.
