Gulling Offerson was a prominent citizen of Beaver Creek and was county commissioner for many years.  He bought the original homestead of George Townsend.  The lettuce boom started in the 1920’s.  Valley farmers, especially those in the Bachelor Gulch area began planting head lettuce.  Lettuce thrived in the climate and mountain soils, grew quickly, and tasted particularly crisp.
