Lettuce Becomes Cash Crop

Accourding to the Eagle Valley Enterprise newspaper of April 22, 1927, "A high-altitude demonstration train, outfitted by the horticultural department of the Colorado Agricultural College was to arrive in avon on April 25.  Colorado has an enormous marketing advantage in the flavor of the mountain-grown crops, but this advantage was too frequently lost by careless handling.  Two factors working to the disadvantage of local growers were "pack and yield."  Better growing practices and more careful packing should result in a fifty percent increase in revenue, assered E.F. McKune, federal-state inspection supervisor." (Courtesy of Eagle County Historical Society, Eagle Public Library.)
