Brett Ranch

The Brett Ranch is made up of the oldest surviving buildings along the Eagle River corridor.  Built before 1900, there was no sawmill to provide lumber for the buildings, so the house was hewn from logs and chinked. Today the buildings still stand, but modern development is encroaching on the site.
In the winter of 1885, Joseph and several other men ventured out to retrieve an elk they had killed.  It turned cold and Joseph got his feet wet.  When he returned to the ranch, his feet were frozen.  He was taken by sled to Red Cliff., where both feet had to be amputated at mid-step.  After several months recovering, he continued his active lifestyle.  Joseph lived in the house he built for over 50 years.  Below is the photo of the home then, and in 1997.
